Are multivitamins necessary for children?

For most children eating a reasonably varied diet, no. The cases where one genuinely helps are specific, and there is a better approach almost nobody uses.

4 situations where a gap is genuinely likely, and a parent can see all four

You're standing in the aisle holding a box, doing the thing every parent does. Trying to work out whether this is caution or marketing.

Here is the answer we arrived at while building a company that sells these, which took longer to admit than it should have. A multivitamin is the easiest way to cover a gap. It is not the best way. The better approach is targeted: find out what's actually short, with a blood test, and address that specific thing.

Almost no parent is going to do that regularly for a child. Most adults don't do it for themselves either, and not because they're careless. Blood tests mean appointments, waiting, and a GP who has ten minutes and other priorities.

So the real question isn't "best versus nothing". It's "easiest versus nothing", and that's a narrower and more honest question.

The short answer

  • For most children eating a reasonably varied diet, no.
  • The better approach is testing and targeting. It is also the one nobody sustains.
  • The situations where a daily multinutrient genuinely earns its place are specific and knowable, and they are listed below.
  • You cannot tell by looking at a child. That's the whole difficulty.

What "necessary" is actually asking

A nutrient gap isn't a mood, a growth spurt or a set of dark circles. It's an intake below what a body needs, sustained long enough to matter, and it is invisible from the outside.

Which means the honest version of the aisle question is not "does my child seem fine". It's "is anything in this child's week reliably absent".

That's answerable without a laboratory, and it's the assessment worth doing first.

Where gaps genuinely come from

Four situations account for most of it.

A food group has gone. No meat, no dairy, no fish, for months rather than a fortnight. This is the single most reliable predictor, and it's the one parents can see without any test at all.

Intake is genuinely narrow. Not "picky" as in refuses broccoli. Picky as in the same six foods, every week, for a year.

Vitamin D and the latitude problem. This is the one gap that's near-universal in northern Europe for part of the year, because skin makes very little of it in winter regardless of how well anyone eats. It's also why the NHS advises a vitamin D supplement for children across specific age bands rather than leaving it to diet.

A raised requirement. Growth spurts, and for teenage girls the jump in iron once periods start.

If none of those four describes your child, the case for a daily supplement is weak, and we'd rather say so than let you buy on a vague worry.

Why the better approach loses anyway

Testing works. It tells you what's actually happening rather than what might be.

It also requires a GP willing to run it, a child willing to have blood taken, and a parent willing to repeat this periodically as the child grows and their eating changes. That's three obstacles, and the third one is where it falls down. A one-off test at seven tells you very little at eleven.

So most families end up choosing between an educated guess and nothing. A broad, low-dose daily product is what an educated guess looks like.

And here's the shortfall in our own product. Broad-and-low is the right shape for covering an unknown small gap. It is exactly the wrong shape for correcting a real deficit. If a test came back showing something genuinely low, you would want a targeted product at a corrective dose, and ours is not that. We built the guess, not the correction.

What we'd actually do first

  1. Write down what your child ate for a week. As it happens, rather than reconstructing it on Sunday night. Most families find one food group is thinner than they thought and one is fine.
  2. Ask specifically about vitamin D, separately from everything else, because it's the gap that doesn't depend on how well your child eats.
  3. If she has started her periods, ask for ferritin, not just a full blood count.
  4. Count what's already going in. Fortified cereal, a drink, a gummy from a grandparent. Three sources is common and only you can see all three.
  5. If something looks genuinely off, that's a GP appointment, not a shopping decision. Bring the week of food with you. It makes the ten minutes far more useful.

Where we fit, honestly

At the end of that list, not the start of it.

If your child eats a wide range of food, gets outside, and has no raised requirement, a multivitamin is not doing much and we would rather you kept your money. If intake is narrow or a food group has gone, a daily multinutrient covers the gaps that creates, which is a real job even if it's an unglamorous one.

That's the whole claim. We think it's enough.
