One of us gives her ten-year-old magnesium when his legs ache after football. The honest part is that from one week to the next, you never quite know whether it did anything.
The short answer
- The most honest answer is that most people feel nothing at all, and that doesn't mean it isn't doing anything.
- Water-soluble vitamins, the B group and vitamin C, move through the body in hours to days.
- Vitamin D is slow. Blood levels take weeks to months to settle.
- If you notice a dramatic difference on day one, it was almost certainly not the multivitamin.
A supplement isn't a medicine
This is where the confusion starts, so we will say it bluntly.
A painkiller is designed to produce a sensation. You take it, and half an hour later there's a difference you can feel. A multivitamin doesn't do that. It fills gaps in a diet. Filling a gap rarely produces a sensation, particularly if the gap was small.
Someone who already eats a varied diet could take a multivitamin for a year and notice absolutely nothing. That's not a product that failed. It's a product that had very little to do.
Timescales, as far as anyone knows
Hours to days. The B vitamins and vitamin C are water-soluble. The body takes what it needs and passes the rest in urine. They don't accumulate, which is why they're taken daily rather than weekly.
Weeks. This is the timescale on which a routine forms, which is a real change even if it's not a physiological one. Taking something every day for three weeks is what separates a supplement from a tub forgotten in a cupboard.
Weeks to months. Vitamin D is fat-soluble and gets stored. Blood levels rise slowly and can take two to three months to settle at a new level. If anything here has a long timescale, it's this.
The thing you'll actually notice, and it isn't what you expect

That's riboflavin, vitamin B2, which is intensely yellow and is passed in urine. It's harmless, it's immediate, and it's the one visible change most people register.
Two reasons that matters. It alarms people who weren't expecting it. And it gets misread either as proof the product "is working" or, in the other direction, as proof it's "all going down the drain". It's neither. It's a strongly coloured vitamin doing what it always does.
When should you conclude anything?
Three months is a reasonable point to stop and think. It's long enough for vitamin D to settle and for the routine to stop being novel.
The question to ask then isn't "do I feel different?". It's "why did I start taking this?". If the answer was to cover an irregular diet during a difficult stretch, the absence of a sensation tells you nothing about whether it worked. If the answer was to fix a specific problem, that's a conversation for your GP, with a blood test, not for a tub.
The part that doesn't flatter us
If you're hoping to feel different tomorrow, this is the wrong product. We do nothing that produces a quick sensation, and we don't know of an honest multivitamin that does.
More than that: a supplement that makes you feel something immediately should make you suspicious, not satisfied. Either it contains a stimulant dose of something, or an ingredient you weren't expecting, or you're feeling the expectation rather than the product. None of those is good news.
The label lists the nutrients and their declared amounts per daily dose. It cannot tell you whether you will feel a difference or when.
